Wounded Knee Lakota Youth!
Welcome at the website,
I’ve always had a fascination for the original inhabitants of North-America starting from an early age. Even when I was young, I realized that there was something wrong about the way the Native Americans were brought in the media and how they gained publicity. This was the reason why I wanted more answers concerning the history and culture of the native inhabitants of America. My primary focus was on the Lakota Sioux that live in South Dakota.
At a later stage in my life, I went to the Pine ridge reservations myself to actually see what it’s like on the reservations. I knew
that severe poverty and other problems existed among the population.
When I arrived on the scene for a cultural visit, the misery exceeded my worst expectations and it broke my heart to see such a once proud group of people suffer. I was shocked to find out that this exceptional group of people is on the verge of losing its cultural and spiritual legacy. The absence of strength and the dominant feeling of sorrow could be felt just by looking at them. To bear the knowledge that most of the issues on the reservations is caused by their own government is frightening. The taking of the Black Hills, which is a sacred area to the native
s, keeping the population at a state of severe poverty, giving bad and hazardous trailers that are too small for most families to live in and selling alcohol just near the reservations are just a few examples. The mining of uranium in the Badlands which causes environmental problems and damaging the entire ecosystem were unbearable factors.
Too sad for words!
During my stay at the reservation I came in contact with Dakota High Hawk and his family. I saw that these people do have the strength and the belief to turn the tide for themselves and their people. Dakota is the greatest example of a young man that is fighting for his own future and that of his people. I was very impressed by his bravery and passion, and because of this, his passion became my passion. We decided to work together and build the foundations of the organization here in the Netherlands. We are doing so, because we want to have a broader reach around the world, and to actually break the solitary lifestyle that the natives are currently living.
Dakota achieved this in part by raising his own organization: Wounded Knee Lakota Youth Org. The organization involves in small scaled projects and activities on the reservation. I am helping him by raising funds here in the Netherlands.
I believe in the power of positive thought and by combing them, I believe we can motivate the Lakota population to create a good view of themselves and their future.
I thank you for your time.
With regards,
Inez Witjes
